Lower Merion edges Boyertown, 1-0, in District 1-AAA opener

By Thomas Nash

BOYERTOWN — Sometimes, the ball just doesn’t bounce the way it’s supposed to. No. 12 Boyertown found that out Thursday as it lost to No. 21 Lower Merion, 1-0, on a cold, windy evening in the opening round of the District 1-AAA playoffs at Memorial Stadium.

Off a corner kick which bounced around in front of the Bears’ net, Lower Merion sophomore Ryan Tillman headed it in to give the Aces the game’s lone goal.

“That’s just the way it goes sometimes,” said Boyertown head coach Scott Didyoung. “Sometimes the ball rolls your way, other times it doesn’t. Outside of that scoring play, they hardly had many other chances to score on us.”

With the victory, Lower Merion (12-6-1) travels to face No. 5 Plymouth Whitemarsh Saturday at a time to be determined.

“We’re really happy with how the team played tonight,” Lower Merion head coach Nico Severini said. “Being underdogs, we know that it’s just going to keep getting tougher the rest of the way. So at this point, we’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Football: Last-second play spells victory for Lower Merion over Harriton

A 6-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Brandon Jones to senior receiver Malik Ward with 10 seconds to go gave Lower Merion a 14-10 win against Harriton at Arnold Field Saturday afternoon.

Jones said, “We ran four verticals [with our receivers], and [Ward] cut in, and I hit him on the break. He was right there to make the catch, and I give a lot of thanks to my [offensive] line [for the touchdown].’

Lower Merion head coach Bryan Scopelliti said, “We usually don’t use that play down at the goal line, but during the [prior] timeout, [the coaching staff and Jones] talked about using that play, and Brandon was confident it would work.’

The Aces controlled the ball for much of the second half, running 36 plays to Harriton’s 17, thanks to its offensive line — junior left tackle Mike Berg, junior left guard Tanner Eisenhardt, junior center Jake Weinberg, junior right guard Oscar Wegbreit and junior right tackle Ryan McConnell.Scopelliti said, “I tell the team, and particularly the offensive line, to be like stonecutters – if we keep hitting, they’ll eventually crack. Our offensive line was tough today.’

Lower Merion junior running back Isaac Iglesias, who Scopelliti calls “a tough runner,’ helped the Aces control the ball with 94 yardsin 22 carries.

Girls soccer: Lower Merion’s Tori Klevan is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

A senior forward, Klevan scored a dozen goals in 10 games for the Lower Merion girls’ soccer squad. The only freshman to start on the Aces’ 2011 state qualifying team, she was a first team All-Central League and All-Main Line selection last fall. Klevan is also a member of the Continental FC Delco soccer club. Off the pitch, she was a member of the school record-setting 4×400 and the 4×800 relay squad. She is president of the student body at Lower Merion, and editor of the Merionite, the school newspaper.

Main Line Media News: What, to you, has been the most memorable goal to date? Can you describe the unfolding of the play that led to the goal, and your role in it?

Tori Klevan: My most memorable goal this year was my winning goal against Harriton. They had just scored on us to tie the game with five minutes left. Thirty seconds after our tap, I dribbled up the field and placed the ball in the corner of the goal to win the game.

Main Line Media News: You mentioned that the highlight of your Lower Merion soccer career to date was being on the LM squad that went to the PIAA state tournament. Can you share with us your most vivid memory of that experience?

Tori Klevan: We played Neshaminy after our first playoff upset win against West Chester Henderson. It was freezing cold and raining and little did I know, I had mono. I felt like I had hypothermia, but I kept playing and we came out with a win.
